dc.description.abstract | In recent years, Ghana has rapidly developed into a dynamic knowledge base economy. Along with this development is the issue of human resource management practice in public institutions which have witnessed numerous challenges in recent years. Government faces a lot of difficulties of having to address these challenges in the context of increasing competition in the global knowledge economy. This research was conducted to assess and clarify the nature of human resource management practices in the three Polytechnics in Northern Ghana. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative research approaches to gather data, based on which conclusions and recommendations have been made. The study found that current human resource management practices are characterised by: insufficient empowerment of workers; insufficient career development opportunities; inadequate compensation; weak training and development; and lack of supportive policy culture for institutions. The study recommends the development of a national framework on human resource practices that transcends into effective human resource governance in Polytechnics. The results also provide a practical guide to managers as well as policy makers, to enable them recognize, comprehend and initiate measures that will make the workplace a more pleasant one for workers, and so awaken employees’ intent to enhance performance. | en_US |
