dc.description.abstractThe purpose of the study was to investigate the human resource needs of the administrative staff of University for Development Studies, Tamale. The study looked at sources of recruitment, sources of data for determining training needs, training methods used for the administrative staff training programme, performance appraisal and staff development programme. Purposive sampling was used to select administrative staff of the University for Development Studies. A total of 76 respondents drawn from Nyankpala and Tamale Campuses took part in the study. Questionnaire was the main instrument. used for the data collection. The study revealed the following key findings: that the main source of recruitment of administrative staff adopted by University for Development Studies was external advertising. The study also revealed that, the main source of data for determining training needs of administrative staff was performance appraisal. The method used during administrative staff training programme was on-the-job training. The study also revealed that performance appraisal was conducted annually. The study also reveals the following recommendations: In service training was proposed by the administrative staff as a measure that should be put in place for improving staff development, that management should adopt other sources recruitment of staff; for example, through friends and internal advertising and that supervisors should conduct performance appraisal at least twice in a year in order to check absenteeism, and laziness of staff.en_US
