PRIVATE SECTOR PARTICIPATION IN SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN WALEWALE TOWNSHIP IN THE NORTHERN REGION OF GHANA

Abstract

The study sought to examine private sector participation In solid waste management in the Walewale Township. The study adopted the qualitative research approach to collect and analyse data. The methods employed were semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and direct observation. Further the study revealed that Zoom lion Ghana Limited is the only private waste management company in the town. Although 74% of households in Walewale are aware of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, only 26% have registered for their services. The study again revealed that the West Mamprusi District Assembly has no direct control over the activities of Zoomlion Ghana Limited since the contract was entered into by Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development. The only sanction the District Assembly has is to refuse to sign reports of the Company. Also, the District Assembly has no by-laws regarding waste management in the town. The study recommends that the District Assembly enact by-laws on waste management and encourage residents to register for the services of Zoomlion Ghana Limited .
